International Data Transfers

Individuals risk losing the protection of the GDPR if their personal data is transferred outside of the EEA.

For this reason, the GDPR only allows transfers of personal data outside the EEA, or the protection of the GDPR, when the rights of the individuals in respect of their personal data are protected in another way.

Essentially this means the country the personal data is being transferred to should be recognised as having Data Protection laws which offer the same level of protection as the GDPR (called an ‘adequacy decision’ from the European Commission).
